Characteristics of Papua Guava Tree (Syzygium jiewhoei) in the Wild

Syzygium jiewhoei
Papua guava (Syzygium jiewhoei) is a new species from Western New Guinea, Indonesia, which has been described and illustrated. The tree is closely related to Syzygium recurvovenosum but differs in various vegetative and reproductive morphological characteristics.

So far, Syzygium jiewhoei can only be found in lowland forests around Timika, Papua Province, Papua New Guinea. However, the species has now been introduced for cultivation as an ornamental tree, especially in Southeast Asian countries.

Over time, the popularity of Syzygium jiewhoei as an ornamental tree skyrocketed and in the end, the seeds of this tree were marketed at a high price in the market. Syzygium jiewhoei seedlings as high as 30-50 cm are currently priced between $150 to $200 in Indonesia and certainly much higher in other countries.

HOW TO CULTIVATE PAPUA GUAVA:

Syzygium jiewhoei or Papua guava is easily propagated from seed. Seeds taken from ripe fruit can be directly planted and germinated within 3-4 weeks.

The best time to plant Syzygium jiewhoei seeds is early summer when they grow faster. However, the seeds can germinate in any season in tropical areas with high temperatures such as Jakarta and surrounding areas.
