Characteristics of Mempat Tree (Cratoxylum formosum) in the Wild

Mempat or Gerunggang (Cratoxylum formosum) is a tree from the Hyperiaceae family. This tree can grow to a height of 40-45 meters and a trunk with a diameter of 65 cm. Its distribution includes Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

The mempat tree also produces beautiful flowers that appear in summer which makes it one of the trees of choice to be planted on the side of the road or a large yard.

The leaves are long-stemmed which are usually narrow to wide oval, 15-18 cm long, and 6-8 cm wide. The young leaves are reddish and turn green when they are old.

The flower consists of a pink hue and is fragrant. Flower buds appear every July. Then it collapsed in October.

The fruit is ellipsoid, dark brown, 10-19 mm long, and 4-6 mm in diameter. The fruit will open into thirds when it is ripe to release seeds.

Brownish seeds are elongated droplets, 6-7 mm long and 3 mm in diameter, each fruit-producing several seeds.
