Characteristics of Benda Tree (Artocarpus elasticus) in the Wild

Artocarpus elasticus
Benda or Bendo is a species of tree that is still of the same genus with Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). Fruit Benda similar to the arising or Kluwih fruit (Artocarpus camansi), with soft and slightly sticky thorn-like projections.

In Malaysia, the Benda tree is known as Tekalong or Terap but is different from the native terap (Artocarpus odoratissimus). The Benda tree in various regions in Indonesia is also called by various names such as Benda, Teureup (Sundanese), Bendha (Javanese), Kalam (Mentawai), Torop (Karo), Bakil (Malay), Kapua, Kumut, Pekalong (Kalimantan).

The Dayaks who live around the Pesaguan River and Gerunggang River call the Benda tree by the name of Torap for the young tree, and the Punuk for the tree that has already borne fruit.

The natural distribution of the Benda tree includes Burma, Siam, Malaya, to Palawan. This tree generally grows wild in lowland forests up to 1,500 m above sea level. It is also often found growing wild in abandoned, unattended land.

Leaves are round or oval, measuring 12-60 x 10-35 cm, long hairy brown or reddish yellow, rounded base, and tapered tip.

The flowers are in stumps and grow in the armpits of leafy twigs. Finger-like males measuring 6-20 x 2-4 cm, yellow when young and brown when ripe.

The fruit is syncarp, yellow to brown, measuring 11 x 5 cm, tightly covered by short bumps similar to short spines. Ellipsoid seeds, measuring 10 x 6 mm, wrapped in the white flesh.

Benda tree small to medium-sized between 20-30 meters, rarely reaching 40 meters high, with straight trunks and rarely branch.

Pepagan is gray-brown, the inside of the stem is yellowish to pale brown and has a yellowish-white sap.

 
BENEFITS OF BENDA TREE

Fruit Ripe items can be eaten fresh or processed into culinary delights (but they are less delicious when processed into food). The seeds can also be eaten boiled or fried.

The young fruit can be started like jackfruit. However, the Benda tree is more often eaten in a ripe state.

Tree sap Benda is often used as an adhesive to ensnare birds.

Minangkabau people in the Japanese occupation used fibers from the tree trunk Benda to make pants, this story is enshrined in the Minangkabau rhyme “ich ni san shi go rok, burlap sarawa tarok”.

In Java, the sap and bark of the Benda tree are used to make traditional medicine, and the seeds are extracted into hair oil.

In Pattani, Thailand, Benda leaves are used to treat intestinal worms by local use.
